Domain Investing in Asia Pacific: Markets Beyond China

While China dominates discussions of Asian domain investing (particularly for numeric domains and short .com names), the broader Asia-Pacific region represents a diverse collection of growing markets with distinct characteristics, opportunities, and challenges. India, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands each have their own domain ecosystems, ccTLD dynamics, and buyer demographics.

India: The Fastest-Growing Major Market

India represents the largest untapped domain investment opportunity in Asia-Pacific. With over 800 million internet users and rapid digitization of commerce, government services, and education, India’s demand for domain names is accelerating.

The .in extension has seen steady growth as Indian businesses increasingly establish online presences. Local language domains (using Devanagari and other Indian scripts through internationalized domain names) represent an emerging but still small segment. Most Indian commercial activity occurs on .com and .in domains, with .com carrying the prestige premium it holds globally.

Investment opportunities in the Indian market include geographic domains (India has thousands of cities and towns digitizing their local commerce), industry-specific Hindi-English hybrid keyword domains, and domains serving India’s booming startup ecosystem (India produces the third-most startups globally after the US and China).

The challenges include lower average domain sale prices compared to Western markets (reflecting India’s lower average income levels), payment processing complexities for international transactions, and a less mature aftermarket infrastructure.

Japan: High Value, Limited Access

Japan has the third-largest economy globally and a highly developed internet infrastructure, but the Japanese domain market is relatively insular. The .jp ccTLD is well-established with strict registration requirements (registrants must have a Japanese address), and Japanese businesses prefer .jp and .co.jp domains for domestic credibility.

For international investors, the opportunity is primarily in .com domains containing Japanese cultural terms, technology keywords, or business terms that appeal to Japanese companies expanding globally. Japan’s anime, gaming, and technology industries create specific demand for related English-language domains.

The challenge is market access: Japanese domain transactions often occur through Japanese-language platforms and brokers, and cultural business norms (including longer negotiation cycles and preference for established relationships) differ from Western aftermarket practices.

Australia and New Zealand

The .com.au extension dominates the Australian market, with registration restricted to entities with a registered Australian business number (ABN) or trademark. This restriction creates a more controlled market where domain speculation is limited but legitimate business domains command strong prices.

Australia’s strong economy, English-speaking population, and high internet adoption make it a reliable market for both .com.au and .com domains. Australian businesses increasingly operate on .com for international reach while maintaining .com.au for domestic credibility.

New Zealand’s .nz extension underwent a liberalization in 2014, allowing direct registration of second-level .nz domains (previously, only .co.nz was available for commercial use). This created a brief speculation wave that has since stabilized.

Southeast Asia: Emerging Opportunities

Southeast Asia (Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia) represents a collection of rapidly growing internet markets with combined populations exceeding 700 million.

Singapore punches above its weight as a regional technology hub. The .sg extension is established, and Singaporean companies are active buyers of premium .com domains for regional and global operations.

Indonesia has the fourth-largest internet user base globally. The .id extension is growing, and Indonesia’s large, young, digitally native population creates demand for domains serving e-commerce, social media, and digital services.

Vietnam and Thailand are experiencing rapid internet commerce growth, with domestic domain markets maturing alongside local startup ecosystems.

The challenges across Southeast Asia include fragmented markets (each country has different ccTLD policies and registrar ecosystems), varying levels of aftermarket maturity, and currency and payment processing complexity for cross-border transactions.

The .ai Connection

The .ai extension is technically the ccTLD of Anguilla (a Caribbean territory, not an Asian country), but its adoption has been driven significantly by Asian technology companies. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Indian AI companies are active buyers of premium .ai domains, creating a connection between Asian tech markets and this Caribbean ccTLD.

Identity Digital’s takeover of .ai registry management in January 2025 has improved the extension’s integration with Asian registrars, likely accelerating adoption across the region.

Investment Strategy for Asia-Pacific

For Western investors interested in Asia-Pacific domain opportunities, the most practical approach is holding .com domains with keywords relevant to Asian markets (generic terms that Asian companies need for global expansion), monitoring ccTLD drop lists for premium names in major Asian markets, building relationships with Asian domain brokers and forums (like DN.com for the Chinese market), and tracking startup ecosystem growth across the region for emerging category opportunities.

The long-term opportunity in Asia-Pacific is substantial: the region’s internet user growth rate exceeds the global average, digital commerce adoption is accelerating, and the supply of premium domain names in regional markets is still relatively affordable compared to the US and European markets.
